ISO 13849-2, Part 2: Validation, specifies the procedures to be followed for validating by analysis or tests, the safety functions of the system, the category achieved and the performance level achieved. In Part 1, ISO 13849, the design of the safety system is based on the risk assessment performed by the manufacturer of the machine.

To achieve Performance Level PL d with Category 3 according to ISO 13849-1 under use of only one position NOTE 2 For the definition of required performance level, see 3.1.24. NOTE 3 The requirements provided in this part of ISO 13849 for programmable electronic systems are compatible with the methodology for the design and development of safety-related electrical, electronic and programmable electronic control systems for machinery given in IEC 62061. ISO 13849 – 1 Cat­egory 3 is NOT the same as Con­trol Reli­able, but we’ll get into that in more detail in a sub­sequent post.
